anyway this post is supposed to be a day before our presentation (WEDNESDAY)
so we came to class and did our final touch ups by adding sound effects and music for the background. Germaine did the credits and then we added it in.. however, she had to do it a few times because we forgot to add some people's name.. haha.
Overall it was really good i feel.. even though we spotted a number of mistakes like seeing a hand, shadows of hands and lighting problems.. etc..
basically we compiled everything and finished it all today! :D
personally i really enjoyed this project very much and hope everyone else did as well! :D

LAST POST!!!!
well for the video, it is not really that good but also not really that bad. hmm, well maybe it is the first time we are doing stop motion and without much knowledge about it so its not bad!!! but there are alot of things that we can improve on. at first i thought that there will be many negative comments like the shakyness, lightning and i was afraid that they cant understand the story with the character w/o any expression but but with all the applauds from the classmate, it is really very encouraging and i felt really good. i really enjoy during this module and perhaps next time i will try stop motion again!
GOOD JOB PEOPLE!!!!
BYEBYE!!!

Day 18
I DIDNT BLOG!
BUT THURSDAY WAS THE LAST DAY!
WOOOOOOO!
Our presentation, I thought, was A-W-E-S-O-M-E-Z-I-S-M!
It was great.
Many good feedback, and since it was our first time doing it, and probably one of the first times in MOI, we did great!
YAY!
I am so glad this project is over.
But as a new chapter closes, a new one opens.
CHARACTER DESIGN CLASS ON MONDAY!
Noooo.
But overall,
I think this project has taught me a lot about stop motion, and also dynamics of a team.
So glad I took part in this project. (Not like I had a choice.)

Day 17
it's going pretty well i must say, everybody does what they are given to do etc. i think it's great that we didn't meet with any personal conflicts, and that we tried to solve the problems we've faced along the way. but i suppose with more time given, we could have done more to improve it. like re-shooting certain scenes that were too over exposed, or perhaps adding facial expressions to the vegetables cos i realised that sometimes the movements tend to be a little stiff (there's only so much we can do to a vegetable...like tilt or turn but that's about it! we can't bend or twist it.) and so it might take away from the character's emotion ect. but now i'm pretty satisfied especially since we are really all new to stop-motion.
this is going to be my last post for this blog and so i wanna say thank you to my groupmates as well as all those who have helped us! it has been a really fun experience working with yall!! :D
cheers!
gina.

Day 16
Today i did the credits...i was given the choice of either animating the thought bubble or credits and so after winning 3 games of scissors, paper, stone with jarrold (MUAHAHA!) i picked credits. :] Finished it today! and i piece the opening scene to scene 7.5. I'm almost done except that i still need to do colour correction, leveling and the audio. :]
I saw some other groups work and i must say that it looks great! They all seem really stress though. D: but it's alright...it'll be over by thursday! :]

Day 15

Day 14
At first, only Gina and germaine were suppose to do the voice overs.
Then came to the boy's part, and either one of them tried to do the guy's part, but it didnt work.
So... they looked at me and said, "We already got a young man's voice here what."
So, I was dragged in to do the guy's part.
I think I didnt mind doing it, although I hesitated a bit.
It turned out to be fun though, and all of us laughed at each other's part.
Gina did the voice over for the grandmother, while germaine did the voice over for the cashier.
I think we were quite fast, as we finished all the recording in less than 2 hours.
Now, all we have to do is match the voice over with the video and compile the scenes together.
I was given 2 scenes, the opening and the credits to do.
I think it is quite ok, and I got the whole weekend to do all these work.
Overall, I think it was a good idea choosing stop motion for our animation2.
It was a new experience and the entire thing wasnt very stressful and hurried.
Also, we dont have to do lip sync and colouring, and line drawing and stuff... Muahahhaa.
We are almost done with this project!
1 more week to go!
Go Slurp!

yay!
i must say that the rest of my group members are really fast...we only had about 4 or 5 scenes left to shoot today and wrap up! yay!! GOOD JOB PEOPLE!! :D:D I heard they shot about 21 scenes yesterday? awesomeness!
Today's shoot was quite fast but i realised that we kinda have a continuity problem with our scenes. We did not plan well enough i think so we ended up mostly improvising on the spot and had to change some of the scenes a little from the original storyboard. But it's okay as we managed to solve some of the continuity problem. We'll still have to check if the flow is right by pieceing up the images of all the scenes first, in case there is some problem. If theres a problem, most likely we'll have to reshoot the scene. But lets hope theres no problems! :]
Anyway, we managed to wrap up the scenes at about 4 plus. Since we had more time, we decided to make a stop motion sequence for our production name! it was quite random really. We just decided to cut up the other shoppers...like the carrots, potatoes, corn etc. and then use them to form our group name. heh. Well we figured since they are rotting, may as well make full use of them. :D It was really fun and fast! Had fun cutting the poor things up. I might put up the video sequence for our production name up if it doesn't take too long to load. Blogger can be so sloooow maaan. :]
YEA. IT'S A WRAP!!! :D now on to the tedious part of pieceing images, compiling, editing etc.

awesome or what. hahahah
we are all so glad that things are going quite fast! think we'd be able to finish it.. hopefully!
it'll look really cool. :)
So for these past 2 days it was actually a little tiring because we did quite a lot of scenes.
scene = moving + snapping + moving + snapping.........
yes. HAHA. but the AFTER is awesome lah. watching how this stop motion thing is working well makes us all really happy!
we had some problems today, the usual problem would be lighting.
Also, the backdrop as gina mentioned in the previous entry... we are like super budget, so most of our stuff are very flimsy; but we're doing goood :)
oh btw, THANKS amanda for lending us your lamp and adaptor.. :)
so there was this scene where we were supposed to shoot the 2 heads passing by the cashier sign; we decided to cut that out because it would be very odd due to the continuity of the story and the fact that our cauliflower is extremely short. hehe.
but we still managed to make the story flow.
We finished all the scenes at the cashier area! woo!
the part where the items magically goes into and out of the basket is my favourite part. hahah
anyway! we're going to continue the 8 scenes tmr!
while we were shooting, germaine was compiling the things we took yesterday at home. yay. hope we'll be able to finish soon!
and germ is coming back to sch tmr! yayyy :D
here are some pictures shuxian took with her hp!

Day...11!
today we completed 6 scenes!! whoooooo!! :D pretty darn happy! ;b we encountered some continuity problems though but we managed to solve it. added an extra scene (the product entering the basket which was nicccceee) and switched the numbers for some. we had the usual problems of lighting, shadow and unintentional item movement but we tried our best to keep those problems to the minimum. but it's still rather inevitable especially because of camera shake. ;X that can't be helped. Amanda said she's more concerned about the storytelling bit and not so much on the rest though and so that's a little comforting i suppose. ;]
oh and i'm not sure if this is mentioned yet but we decided not to put in any expressions for now...so it'll be shown through "body language". hopefully that would work!!

we also need a backdrop for our set and so we used the two wooden-textured-looking boards that shushu bought over the weekend. ;] there's a line inbetween but at least it looked better than having other surroundings in the shot.
Our broccoli was also starting to rot and turn yellow and so we found some green spray to spray on our broccoli! doesn't it look much healthier now? xb

and raymond helped us to cut out the rotting brown bits on our califlower. ;] thanks! and ohoh here's another thank you to amanda for lending us your lamp!! ;] heh.
anyway, it was fun and time passes really quickly when we're doing the stop motion. we also have to be innovative and creative when solving certain problems. i wished that our course included some modules on stop-motion...that would be really awesome...but too bad it doesn't. ;[ but if this stop-motion piece turns out well and if my skills improve on stop-motion, i might use it for my FYP seeing how i can't exactly draw and my 3D skills are pretty horrid. ;b glad to know that there's at least some other alternative! yea so thats today!! :D
and oh yea we watched two wallace and gromit animations today during our project3 class. it's stop-motion as well and it's really inspiring and awesome!! go watch it if you haven't seen it yet! ;]

Day 10
OK since Friday there's no school and nothing to blog about. but still i think i still have to blog something to be fair to my group members
okay so first the checklist on the stuff we have to do for the props.
1) the cashier sign
2) the background
3) money (on the cashier)
4) labels for the shelves
5) supermarket entrance
I went to buy 2 board for the flooring. i hope that it will fit or suit the environment if not it will be a waste of money.
moving backwards, we tried out a scene which shows the chasing scene of the granny and the young man. i would say that it is a great job that we sort of manage to get the whole thing done within a short time and it is our first try. Hurray!!! there are many things to be noted like the light source, the movement of the main character and the shoppers. i realise that we did not really plan the movment well and is like random movement. especially for the shoppers where they seem to be moving backward and forward. next if the camera. well the camera do shake quite a bit. but there's no choice. we have to keep up with it first and see if there is other option to it. For the lamp case, candice had to bring back her lamp because her siblings need it at home. so i will be bringing another lamp to school and Amanda will be lending us one as well. Thank you!!!
for the interim 2, i was very happy that everyone is please with the short stop motion we did. and it shows that at least we made the right choice on doing stop motion and there is another way to do animation other than 2D & 3D.
so for the long weekend, we have to finish all the prop stuff before we can actually start shooting on monday.
May everything goes well and smoothly!!!

Day 9
Anyway, on thursday, we had a presentation on our project.
The presentation was called "Proof of concept", and we needed to proof that our animation is doable by the end of the block.
So we presented and we went first, because i requested that we go first as i was ill.
We went up and presented our Storyboard, Props, Gantt Chart, Difficulties, and etc.
I did the storyboard, and Amanda commented that a good storyboard will explain for itself.
So i did not speak, and I guess i think everyone understood the storyboard.
I changed the storyboard a little teh day before this presentation because we wanted to add another scene into the storyboard.
During the presentation, we also explained that we were going to use thought bubbles and stuff done in 2d.
But I think there was a misconception about our idea.
Amanda thought that our thought bubble will show words of what the character would say.
And because we said we were going to have voice over, Amanda got confused about us using "voice over"and a speech bubble at the same time.
Actually, we were going to put pictures in our thought bubble and have the voice play in the background.
I think the group now is quite excited to do the animation, but then again, we still fear the worst.
We said that we would try to finish as must as we can, but if we cant, we will try to finish 90% I THINK.
Also, we had some test shots of the top view shot of the chase scene and some random shot of a carrot falling.
i thought that kind of showed the class how our stop motion piece would look like, and we got rather good responses from the class.
Some said that the test shots looked great
I think this is an encouragement for us.
And also, Amanda was being very encouraging by constantly telling us "I think this will be fun."
Not that i dont think this will be fun.
I'm sure this will be fun, but along the fun will come hardwork and frustration.
Well, I am hoping for the best.
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
heh today was rather fun.. i liked looking at the outcome after taking tons of pictures. its super cool.
Jarrold was sick and so he didnt come to school. we suspect that he has swine flu. hehh
germaine and i went down to the equipment store and wanted to loan a remote where we can click from afar to get the camera to snap; so that we will not touch/move the camera. however, to our dismay they do not have such a remote. So we'll make do with what we have and use our camera to snap..
after telling amanda, she gave us some suggestions about the expressions for our characters. we could also not have eyes, nose etc on them. but use camera shots to create the expressions. i thought that was rather interesting..
another problem is that our broccoli is dying. hahah it turned yellow.. so we'd have to prepare a few spare ones to replace them..heard from amanda that we can keep them in newspaper and place them in the fridge to preserve them. heh
so tomorrow is interim 1; proof of concept.
shuxian did the powerpoint today and we also helped to do up the slides.
We stopped doing the slides and moved on to set up our slurp supermarket to shoot.
we had to stop for a while as amanda had a speaker to share with the class his experiences etc..
after the talk, we started shooting and it was funn!
we did the scene where the young man was being chased by the old women around the supermarket. it was rather tedious though, because we had to move quite a number ot things for every single frame. but its really fun. :)
hope tomorrow's interim will be a goooood one!

Day 7
heh pretty cool eh!! we got all excited when we scanned through the pics in the camera. ;b but based on this short tests, i realised that we must be really careful when moving the objects around. if the shelf is moved even just a teeny weeny bit, the movement can be pretty obvious. also, the camera shakes a bit when we press the buttons to get a shot...but we can't really do much about that unless we get one of those things that can be connected to the camera in a way that we won't have to touch the camera but just a button connected by a wire. hmm get what i mean? heh. geez i should go and find out the name for that thing. *googles* hmm i can't seem to find it... anybody know what it's called?
anyway, another thing we got to note is that we don't accidentally block the lighting in some shots. that would be pretty obvious too. but other then that i think we can manage to pull it off! i hope. ;b i would like to see the whole piece done in it's entirety but i'm afraid we wouldn't be able to finish completely...there's only 2 weeks for us to animate the whole thing! but i guess if we plan our schedule properly and stick to it we would be fine. ;] yea so that's what we did today!

Day 6
Today we continued to build our set. Before that, we had consultation with Amanda and i think she gave us quite a bit to think about...like how we're going to split the work up and maximise our time and resources...causes honestly, 1 month is a freaking short time to produce a 2 to 3 minute animation...it feels almost like p2, except we only have like half the time to get it done. We still got to think about how we're going to do the expressions on the veggies cause it's really important in our animation...and 2mr, we'll probably try with lighting etc.
Anyway, today we mostly decorated the supermart shelves with tiny toys, beans etc. The tiny food toys were borrowed from Candice's uncle. It was so entertaining looking through all the tiny toys and all...can't believe people would actualy put so much details into these little objects. some even have the food labels and all. i think it was really cool (i'm a geek like that. heh.) no wonder some people collect stuff like that as a hobby!
Here's some pictures. :]
Check out the details in the toys!!

Our layout so far when we put everything together:

Day 05

OK so today we had a big progress.... we started making our props. as mention, we cut out cardboard that we are going to use to build the shelves. we brought everything up to the studio and start building it. as Tri gave us some comments on how we can join each side of the card boards together, we decided to try different methods of joining to see which joint can hold the cardboards up better.
The first method we did was to get a small piece of cardboard and stick it below the divider as a supporting. the second method which is something like the finger joint that we create a slot that we can slot the 2 piece of cardboard together. and there we see that the second method is better in a way that the out come looks better and it can hold the cardboard upright. Zaihan came along and told us other different methods we can use to hold the dividers for the shelves. as we were trouble by how we can cover the holes on the side of the cardboard, Zaihan gave us a roll of tapes that we can use to cover the holes. it acts like stamps whereby we just need to put a little bit of water on one side of the tape and then it will become sticky andwe can just stick onto it. no extra effort needed.

Next step is adding colour to the shelves. we were deciding to mix a colour that is similar to the orginal cardboard colours. but then was not easy. we wasted quite alot of paint before finalising the colours. and Germ was the one who tried to mix the colour but in the end the colour looks quite a bit off. hahaha... Okay before wasting more paint, we finalised the colour and started painting on it. and the out come looks like this!

We also tried taking pictures of the scenes and it looks great. with that i believe that everyone felt positive and more confidence added to make the stop motion turn successful.

So next week, we will be starting to build more props.
=D
and if you're wondering why is candice is not appearing in the photos, it's bcause she is the photographer!

Day 4
WOOOOO!
Today we had our first interim.
And our group was the first group that have to present our Character design, Story board, etc.
I think the interim went pretty ok.
Although we got a whole lot of questioning from the other groups and Amanda herself.
They asked us if we were sure and confident about this project we were embarking, and also since we are one of the only few people that actually are insane enough to attempt stop-motion, some of us gave an uncertain smile.
but i think we'll be alright.
I THINK.
I also think that this project will be one that we can learn and explore a new skill.
Hmmm.
Anyway, we received comments about how we have to create more tension between the old lady and the young man.
Like how the suspicion part has to be stretched and emphasized.
We were told that yesterday by Amanda, and we did extend our storyboard. But I thought today's one is ok what.
Cuz the top view shot will last for quite long, and tension can be built then.
but its still up to our group to decide on whether we are going to extend it and how.
Then we were asked about our modeling of our props and stuff.
I think since we are the only one doing stop motion, we had a lot of shooting from the class that we had to defend against.
But overall, the crit caused us to worry a little, but still necessary.
I hope we can get the props up soon, and figure out exactly how we are going to tackle this project.
but at least we made a progress today.
We went to the 5th foor to "steal" materials and we managed to get cardboard and a wooden plank for the floor from the PID workshop.
We cut out some of the cardboard today, and tomorrow we are going to try to piece the cardboard together to form the shelves of the mart.
YAY! YIPEE!
-Jarrold
Day 03
HELLO! It’s my turn to blog on Wednesday! I have not been blogging for the longest time. But it feels kinda good to blog again. Haha. We’re doing Animation 3 right now and it has been quite fun so far.
We finalized our storyboards and layout for our story today. To improve our storyboard; more frames were added. As Amanda went around giving advices; she gave our group a considerable amount and it did help make us think bigger and better. Jarrold was doing the storyboards while the rest of us discussed about which character to use; character design and brainstormed a lists of props that will be needed for our set. As Gina and Germaine mentioned, stop-motion is something really new to us. Thus, we have been researching and watching ultra cool youtube videos in class to help inspire us.
We also had to prepare for our presentation tomorrow and therefore we did our powerpoint up in school before we left. We were thinking about the eyes, eyebrows and mouth for the characters and decided to do it in photoshop to showcase for tomorrow's presentation as it will give everyone an idea of how our characters will look like. So far, is has been pretty fun because we get to play with miniature items and they are really cute!
Anyway, here is an example of our character
cute! :)

Day 02
Today we have class as usual and we all agreed on the group name of "slurp!" since we were planning on using food as the characters in our stop-motion. And since the title of our piece is supermarket it's all the more suitable. :b it will also be more fun to work with food yes? more interesting then just using clay or something, and we can also eat them afterwards. heh.
Germ has posted a couple of awesome stop-motion videos yesterday and here's another one! this one involves real food. "It shows an abridged history of American-centric warfare, from WWII to present day, told through the foods of the countries in conflict." yea i'm quoting it cause i'm pretty lazy to rephrase at the moment. ;]
Anyway, since we were told to produce individual storyboards for today's class, each of us had a set of thumbnails/brief storyboard ready to show each other. most of our storyboards are pretty similar and so we just went to pick out the shots that we liked better and lined them in order. Amanda went around giving each group some feedback on their storyboards and she seems pretty oorigh with the way our story flows and all. it's pretty straightforward really. but the real problem is that we all don't have/have little experience with making stop-motion films (including amanda) and so this is really new to us. hopefully it'll turn out the way we want it to! looks like it involves alot of planning and requires patience to execute it well. heh at least it'll be fun. i hope.
Soooo we did some research on stop motion to get a better idea on how it's done and looked at some more stop motion videos. they are pretty inspiring at times! ;]
yea i don't really know what to type anymore so i guess i'll end it here! :]

Day 01: start of animation 2!
anyways, for animation 2, we had to form groups of 5 people and produce a short animation. In my group, there's Shuxian, Candice, Jarrold, Gina and myself. :] Each group had to pick a random card and since there are about 5 groups and only 3 stories, 2 groups would have wildcard. And luckily, we got a wildcard. yay.

The three stories each had a different theme and we got to read them all. We decided on "supermarket", as it was more light hearted and we were also thinking of trying stop motion! and having a supermarket theme would be great as we can make use of fooooood. :D
Also, i wanted to try something new. We already had the chance to do 2D and 3D and so i thought it wouldn't hurt to experiment and try stop motion yes? besides, i was really inspired by stop motion during the holidays. My sis and me saw some stop motion videos on youtube by PES and it is really super duper awesome! check this video out, i really loved it alot!
Tell me you aren't inspired by that! :D
yeaaaaa so our group decided to embark on this risky idea. We know it would involve alot of planning and on top of that, our school doesn't teach us stop motion, which is rather sad. We'll probably have to do alot of research and find out how to go about producing a stop motion film effectively and also consider the set design, props etc. I don't know if we're going to shoot ourselves in the foot for trying something that's so new to us but if everything works out fine, it would be really worth it! and i guess it's a good alternative if you aren't all that good at both 3D and 2D *cough* myself *cough* :]
we all had to come up with thumbnails for our storyboard. we're going to have a group discussion tmr and pick what thumbnails we want for the final storyboard. So fast got homework already. D: so yeaaaaaaaa.
I'm going to end the post with this cool advert. so effective!
awesome much? :]
